Valencian is taught as a subject because it is one of the two official languages of the Valencian Community.
In this subject students learn many things including what the language is, its orgins, people’s identity to language, culture, geography of the Valencian Community (provinces and regions), its food etc. These themes help pupils to understand more fully the place where they live, where they are from and above all draw links and comparisons between the other languages they speak on a daily basis (French or Castellano). Students also learn spelling, grammar, vocabulary and syntax, and most importantly develop a good level of oral and written expression and comprehension.
The study of Valencian prepares students for future university or working life in the Valencian Community as during Years 12 and 13 they have the opportunity to be entered for an official exam at three levels (oral, elemental and mitjà) via the Junta Qualificadora de Coneixements de Valencià (jqcv).
