Art and Design

Art and design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables children to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.

Art and Design is a foundation subject in the National Curriculum. At the British School of Alicante we use the national scheme of work as the basis for our curriculum planning in Art and Design. We have adapted the national scheme to the local circumstances of our school.

In Year 7 students will have the opportunity to use many different processes, techniques and applications. Three units/projects are covered throughout the whole year

Term 1

Drawing Skills

Students are going to focus on the basic elements in art to build a good foundation for future projects. They will develop drawing skills and observational skills, then progress onto colour theory.

The students will be introduced to new artists that use the formal elements in their work. Through looking at artists they will improve research, analytical and critical skills.

  • Pop art project focus on everyday objects
  • General observational studies using tone and line
  • Emphasis on presentation skills

Term 2

All About Me

Students explore their personal identity as a starting point.  They create images that reflect their ideas of themselves, working from observation and imagination.

They develop skills using traditional materials and processes and have the opportunity to combine traditional materials and digital media.  They learn about the ideas, methods and approaches used by other artists who have made images of themselves and/or portrayed others

  • General observational studies/ portraiture
  • Emphasis on painting and digital

Term 3

Hogueras

Students are to use a trip as a starting point. They will visit the hoguera museum and a hoguera artist. They will be asked to find out about the design industry and appreciate the purpose of art.

The students will then create their own ninots linking work with English. 3D skills will be the main focus of this project and teaching the students not to be too protective over their work.

Through this project they learn about cultures, beliefs and traditions.

  • Imagination and creative ideas
  • Group work
