The Secondary department covers children from age 11 onwards, and builds on the achievements of the Primary department.
Studies at ages 11 - 14 From Years 7 - 9 (ages 11 - 14) students study the same range of subjects as Primary, with the addition of French from Year 7 (age 11). However, all lessons are taught by a series of subject specialists. Students of non-Spanish nationality study Spanish as a second language. Students of Spanish nationality validate their studies by following courses in Spanish Language, Literature and Social Sciences according to the curriculum set by the Spanish Ministry of Education.
Towards the end of Year 9, students take Standard Achievement Tests (SATs) in English, Mathematics and Science.
Choices at ages 14 - 16 From Year 10 (age 14), students continue with up to 9 subjects in preparation for the examinations of the Cambridge International General Certificates of Secondary Education (IGCSE). All students are required to study English Language, Mathematics, Science and Spanish. In addition, they have a certain freedom to choose which subjects they prefer and feel will be the most useful for their future career. Further options, such as Business Studies, are available at this stage.
The IGCSE examinations are taken towards the end of Year 11, although some subjects may be taken at the end of Year 10.
